2012 Tour de Lake Bicycle Tours of Lake Murray

The Rotary Club of Lake Murray-Irmo Foundation has announced the 2012 Tour de Lake to be held at Saluda Shoals Park on Saturday, April 21, 2012.

The routes will be fully supported with rest stops, a SAG wagon and police at key intersections. Routes will include a 100 mile “Century” tour around Lake Murray; a 62.5 mile “Metric Century” and a 40 mile route, both ending at Dreher Island State Park for a cruise back to the Lake Murray Dam aboard the Southern Patriot. The Rotary Club of Lake Murray-Irmo Foundation is an IRS approved 501(c)3 organization.

All rides will leave at 7:30 am from the Wetlands Pavilion at Saluda Shoals Park and follow the same route to the second rest stop near Dreher Island. Vans will pick up all riders at the Lake Murray Dam and return them to Saluda Shoals Park to reunite with their bikes.

The 100 mile “Century” route will continue on around Lake Murray and return to Saluda Shoals Park.

The 40 mile route will end at Dreher Island State Park. The 62.5 mile “Metric Century” route will complete an additional 22.5 mile route and will also end at Dreher Island State Park. Riders of these routes will then board the Southern Patriot for a cruise back to the Lake Murray Dam.

The Southern Patriot will depart at 12:00 pm and arrive at the Lake Murray Dam between 2:00 and 3:00 pm. Food, beer and other beverages will be available on board.

Food, beer, and other beverages will also be available at Saluda Shoals Park from 12:00 to 6:00 pm. The staff at Saluda Shoals Park will have multiple activities throughout the day which riders and their families and friends are welcome to attend. Resolution to run the Columbia SC Marathon

After you've had your fill of collards and black eyed peas, we have the perfect resolution for you! Make a resolution to get in shape and start training for the Columbia SC Marathon. Having not held a marathon since the Women’s US Olympic Team Trials in 2000, the city of Columbia is set to host its first marathon in 12 years. The 2012 Columbia SC Marathon, Famously Hot Half-Marathon, Surprisingly Cool 10K, and Columbia SC Kids Marathon, presented by YMCA of Columbia, will take place on March 10, 2012.

The Columbia region’s beautiful southern scenery serves as the backdrop for the inaugural 2012 Columbia SC Marathon. Famous for reaching tip top temperatures during the late summer months, springtime in Columbia proves to be the perfect, moderate temperature for runners to enjoy this all paved, road race.

Starting at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center, the first leg of the race takes runners through the popular Congraee Vista district, rich with a variety of restaurants, art galleries and retailers. Located along the banks of the Congaree River, the Congaree Vista was once a vital warehouse district filled with textile mills and railroad stations. Today it is once again a center of activity in the city.

The course continues through parts of South Carolina’s largest public university, the University of South Carolina. If runners glance to the right during their cross over Assembly Street, they will see where the Fighting Gamecocks play, Williams-Brice Stadium! The Columbia campus is the university’s flagship campus and boasts traditional southern architecture with beautiful landscaping. The ever-expanding campus has more than 350 programs of study for almost 30,000 students from all over the globe.

Continuing into Five Points, participants run through the historic neighborhoods of Shandon, Sherwood Forest, Heathwood and Lake Katherine, all showcasing homes and bungalows with Southern charm, class and character. The Five Points area has been a shopping and commercial district for more than 75 years. This charming City Village has remained a popular destination for all ages to shop and dine, and is also the heart of nightlife for area college students. Shandon is a vibrant, multi-generational community whose homes reflect one hundred years of architectural heritage. The wide, tree-lined streets are favorites of residents and others who stroll, walk, jog or run, while the neighborhood children and adults enjoy the pleasant parks spaced throughout the urban suburb.

After completing the portion of the course near gorgeous Lake Katherine, runners will make their way back toward downtown Columbia, running along popular Trenholm Road. This area is a diner’s dream, offering restaurants specializing in authentic Mexican, Italian, Asian and American cuisine.

Before heading back into the Congraee Vista area, where marathon runner’s will start their second loop, runners will continue on Gervais Street, running pass the South Carolina State House. Right in the hub of downtown Columbia, the copper domed South Carolina State House houses the government of South Carolina. Construction began on the structure in 1851, and damage to the building from General Sherman’s cannons is marked with bronze stars. The State House serves as an anchor facing the thriving Main Street corridor; a street filled with unique restaurants, retail shops, rooftop bars and Columbia’s Museum of Art.

The last mile of the course will take runners back through the University of South Carolina campus on Pickens Street, Greene Street and Sumter Street and past well-known campus landmarks including, The Russell House, Longstreet Theater and The Horseshoe. Part of USC’s original campus dates back to 1805 and is still the heart of the University. The 11 buildings that make up the tradition-rich Horseshoe frame a lush lawn that is an irresistible gathering place for students, faculty, local residences and alumni.

A block of rooms have been reserved for March 8-11, 2012 at the Hilton Columbia Center and Hampton Inn Downtown Historic District. The special room rate will be available until February 9 or until the group block is sold-out, whichever comes first. Both the Hilton and Hampton Inn are located just 1 block from the Marathon and Half-Marathon start. Additional hotels in the surrounding area are also available.

Every year, the January issue of SportsEvents highlights some of the United States most creative and professional convention and visitors bureaus, sports commissions and venues. 2nd Annual Smokin at the Speedway: BBQ Cook Off, Fall-O-Ween & Car Show

Bar-B-Que, Halloween and great show cars may seem like strange companions, but at the Second Annual Smokin at the Speedway they will give visitors a little something for everyone. The event will take place in the grassy infield of the Historic Columbia Speedway, located at 2001 Charleston Highway in Cayce, on October 28-29, 2011.

Last years event was a huge success with 42 competitive BBQ Cook teams, music, and kids play area. This year the event will add a number of new elements such as events embracing the Halloween theme and additional spots in the vendor area for SC Specialty Foods. The addition of Harvest Hope Food Bank as the benefitting charity only enriches the goals of the festival.

The event begins Friday, October 28th with the Cookers competing in an “Any Thing But” competition starting at 6:00. Visitors will be able to sample a wide variety of dishes like Coconut Shrimp, Crab Cakes, Shrimp & Grits to a multitude of soups and stews in addition to being able to view the filming of the “Grate TV Show”. Friday night’s contest will be judged by celebrity judges such as politicians, a former NFL Player, Radio Personalities, and a member of the Clemson National Champion Golf Team.

Along with great food, the Friday night event will include a “Movie Under the Stars” courtesy of the Speedway’s outdoor movie system. For the kids there will be bouncy houses, a Haunted House, and trick or treating with the cook teams. Tickets for Friday night are $5.00 and a non-perishable food donation is encouraged.

Gates will open at 9:00 on Saturday, October 29th, tickets $10.00, as the BBQ Cook Teams compete in their specialty Pork BBQ and Ribs Competitions. The real winners are the visitors who will be able to sample from this incredible variety of BBQ. The teams will compete for a purse of over $5,200.00 in prize money. Many of the top ten teams from South Carolina as well as two SC State Champions are returning to this year’s event.

There will be a wide array of activities beyond great food on Saturday. A new car show will fill the upper third of the 9 acre infield. A Fall-O-Ween costume contest, a pumpkin decorating contest, as well as several bouncy houses and a Fall-O-Ween Haunted House will keep the kids busy. Saturday, the cookers will be passing out candy to the children in costumes as they go "cook-or-treating" around to the cooker's tents for their goodies. Live music will be provided from 10:00 to 2:00 headlined by Greg Austin. The Chik-Fil-A cow will also be on hand with his prize wheel.

Bring in two non-perishable items for the Harvest Hope Food Bank get a discount at the gate and support an important charity in the busy holiday season. A portion of the procedes from the event will also go to Harvest Hope to fight hunger in this very difficult economy. The mission of Harvest Hope Food Bank is to provide for the needs of hungry people by gathering and sharing quality food with dignity, compassion and education. Harvest Hope is a community organization providing relief from hunger throughout 20 counties in South Carolina. Churches, businesses, school groups and civic organizations come together to connect with their communities through Harvest Hope and join our mission to put food on the tables of those who suffer from hunger.

On Friday, September 16, 2011 the Babcock Center Foundation along with the Five Points Association will be hosting the 3rd Annual Long's Bar Stool Classic starting at 5:00 pm.

Pick up your pre-registration packets at the Five Points Fountain starting at 4:00 pm or register at the fountain to get started day of the event. Registration packets will include a official tour t-shirt, souvenier golf ball, prizes, schwagg, after party invite, score card, and more! Each hole will have prizes for putting, volunteers to make sure no one cheats!

First place prize is $500 and 2nd and 3rd place prize packs include a round of golf for 4 at Woodcreek Farms or Wildewood and a free golf lesson from Chris Foley. There will also be a Ben Arnold Wine Tasting at 2 holes, prizes for Holes in Ones, great beer, best dressed prizes, after party - game, free food and cash bar, and free rides from Capital Pedicab during the event for participants.

Columbia, SC Sports Natural Hot Spots

Columbia, SC boasts more than a thriving downtown with rich history and Southern charm. This centrally-located South Carolina hot spot offers beautiful and unique natural venues accommodating a variety of sports events. Its three distinct rivers, scenic lakes, forests and parks distinguish this capital city as a superior location for sports events and recreation.

The Broad River features three miles of unobstructed, calm water, making the perfect venue rowing winter and spring training. With mild temperatures and water that never freezes, the Broad River has been the training location of choice for over 40 rowing teams since 2003. Richland County rowing facility offers teams a purpose-built 100-foot rowing dock as well as near-perfect water for training.

The Saluda River’s Class II to IV rapids – including Stacy’s Ledge, Blast o’matic and Mill Race Rapids – make an exceptional whitewater experience. In 2007, the Saluda River set hosted the IFC Junior Wildwater World Championship, the first international whitewater competition held in the United States, where more than 120 competitors from 15 different countries competed.

Formed as Saluda and Broad rivers meet, the Congaree River calmly flows through the heart of Columbia and offers a scenic venue for events or recreation just steps from thriving entertainment districts. The Congaree River flows through South Carolina’s only national park, Congaree National Park, which offers 22,000 acres including over 20 miles of hiking trails, canoeing, kayaking and fishing. The majestic park features the largest remnant of old-growth floodplain forest remaining on the continent and contains some of the tallest trees in Eastern North America.

Further up the Saluda River, 50,000-acre Lake Murray stretches 41 miles long and up to 14 miles wide. The lake offers canoeing through calm waters, sailing through cutting winds, boating, swimming and fishing. Dreher Island State Park’s 348 acres and 12 miles of shoreline hosts many major fishing tournaments, including Walmart FLW Tour and B.A.S.S. Bassmaster.

Off the water, Harbison State Forest encompasses 2,177 acres of forestland less than ten miles from the downtown district. Its unique urban location offers a surprising 16 miles of trails that weave through the pine and hardwood forest, crossing wandering streams and descending through leafy glades to the Broad River. Events such as the EXTERRA Harbison Half Marathon use the scenic trails to offer competitors a truly unique 13.1 mile course.

The United States Marine Corps Mud Run, hosted for nearly 20 years in Columbia, is counted as one of the most successful and creative uses of natural terrain. Combined with man-made obstacles, the 5.2-mile course has hosted over 14,000 participants, making it the largest mud run in North America.

10th Annual Palmetto Capital City Classic: "It's more than a game...it's an experience!"

It's almost that time of year that we've all been waiting for -- football season -- and with football season comes the Palmetto Capital City Classic! Fall is just around the corner, and this game is sure to bring excitement to the Columbia region.

September 3, 2011 will mark the 10th Annual Palmetto Capital City Classic, an ultimate college football experience. The Benedict College Tigers will take on the Virginia Union University Panthers at the Charlie W. Johnson Stadium with kickoff scheduled for 5:00 pm. The primary mission of the event is to generate revenue for scholarships and financial support for Historically Black Colleges and Universities by highlighting the educational and athletic endeavors through quality athletes, academic programs, sportsmanship and school pride.

"We are thrilled to be celebrating our 10th year," said Willie Jeffries, Collegiate Hall of Fame football coach and executive director of the Classic. "This game brings together so many individuals within and outside of our community, and I believe this year's success will be our best by far."

Broad River Sculls kicks off River Rocks Festival

The Broad River Sculls, a rowing regatta, will be held on Saturday morning, May 28 from 8:00 am to Noon at the Richland County Rowing Center, 1871 Omarest Drive, Columbia, SC. Forty male and female entries from age 13 to 76 and representing nine rowing organizations from SC, NC, GA, TN and MN will compete in single, double and quadruple sculls over a 1000 meter course. The public is invited. Admission is free.

The regatta is presented by Columbia Rowing Club in conjunction with the River Rocks Festival, a fundraiser for the Congaree Riverkeeper. Columbia Rowing Club is a 501(c)3 public charity dedicated to educating the public about the benefits of the sport of rowing and making the sport available to all Midlands residents. Proceeds from the Broad River Scull will benefit Youth Rowing, a program of Columbia Rowing Club.

New Car Show at Love Chevrolet Columbia Speedway Festival and RacersReunion

There are several interesting changes for the third annual Love Chevrolet Columbia Speedway Festival and RacersReunion returning April 14-16. One that will interest many area car buffs is the new car show format.
Event organizers have listened to the suggestions coming from show car participants at the previous RacersReunion events and have decided to make a significant change. This year’s car show (Saturday April 16th), simply titled “The Car Show at RacersReunion” is sponsored by The Trophy and Gift Shop in Cayce, SC and will be open to all years and makes for only a $10.00 entry fee. The entry fee will also cover the event admission ($5.00) for one person. The show will be professionally judged and organizers expect a great turn-out for this year’s event.

Other changes to the event format include moving the Friday night cruise-in to Maurice’s BBQ. Cruisers will gather there at 5:00 PM Friday and Cruise back to Historic Columbia Speedway at 6:00 PM for the Lizard’s Thicket Fish Fry and concert by Black Bottom Biscuits. The parade has been moved from Friday night to Saturday morning. Leaving the Kmart parking lot in West Columbia at 9:00 AM the “50 Years of Love” parade will kick off Saturdays’ events.

This year’s RacersReunion actually gets going on Thursday April 14th at 6:00 PM for a “Chicken Bog Cook-off” and Etheridge and Kimpland concert followed by the “Candle Light Track Walk”. Friday night begins with the “Maurice’s BBQ Cruise-in” and ends with the “Lizard’s Thicket Fish Fry” and concert. In addition to “50 Years of Love Parade” and “The Car Show at RacersReunion”, Saturday’s activities include a vintage race car exhibit and an autograph session with legendary racing celebrities such as Harry Gant, Waddell Wilson, Barry Dodson, Billy Scott, Don Tilley, Paul Lewis, Ned Jarrett and many more. For the first time ever on the RacersReunion stage, attendees will hear the eleven-year-old singing sensation Macayla Reese singing two songs that were written for, but never sang by, Patsy Cline.

Cook-Offs, Cars and Crowns Liven Up Historic Columbia Speedway

The third annual Love Chevrolet Columbia Speedway Festival and RacersReunion will begin Thursday, April 14 and run through Saturday, April 16. This year's event will feature legendary race drivers, including Harry Gant, race cars, show cars, music, food, vendors, and even the "Miss RacersReunion Scholarship Beauty Pageant" winners.

Thursday's festivities will kick-off with a chicken bog cook-off and end with a candle light walk around the historic half-mile Columbia Speedway. Friday will include the "Maurice's BBQ Cruise-In" at 5:00 p.m. and a procession back to the race track at 6:00 p.m. for the "Lizard's Thicket Fish Fry." The "50 Years of Love Parade" will begin Saturday at 9:00 am in the K-Mart parking lot and arrive back at Historic Columbia Speedway for opening ceremonies, followed by an autograph session, vintage race car display, car show, vendors, and children's activities. Newly crowned beauty queens from "The Miss RacersReunion Scholarship Pageant" will be featured on parade float and will represent RacersReunion at local events in the Midlands.

To protect, celebrate and preserve the racing heritage of days passed has been the focus of RacersReunion.com since its inception. Educating today's youth about racing history has always been an objective. "Creating events that provide a walk down memory lane for older fans while including things that interest youth is the challenge," said Jeff Gilder, event coordinator. About the Historic Columbia Speedway

The Columbia Speedway, located at 2001 Charleston Highway in Cayce, has a deep-rooted history that includes some significant firsts. A young Richard Petty ran his first race there on July 12, 1958 in a 1957 Oldsmobile convertible. He won his first ever race there a year later on July 17, 1959. Columbia Speedway became the spot of the first NASCAR race to be held under the lights when the Grand National series made its first ever stop there on Saturday night June 16, 1951. That night Studebaker got its first and only NASCAR victory when "The Rebel" Frank Mundy got to the checkers first. Chevrolet got its first NASCAR victory at Columbia Speedway when Fonty Flock drove a 1955 Chevy to victory on March 16, 1955. Other first include Buck Baker's first Grand National victory on April 12, 1952 in a 1951 Hudson. Buddy Baker ran his first ever race at this historic track on April 4, 1959 in a 1958 Chevrolet. All the stars of the sport during that era raced at Columbia. Ralph Earnhardt, Lee Petty, Curtis Turner, Tiny Lund, David Pearson, Cotton Owens, Little Bud Moore, are only a few of the greats who came to race there.

First time Highland Games & Celtic celebration coming to Columbia

Highland Games will make its first appearance in Columbia, S.C., on April 2, 2011, from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Historic Columbia Speedway in Cayce. Highland Athletics are nine strength based competitions that predate recorded history. In the caber toss, competitors toss and flip a tree trunk measuring over 18 feet. The games are only a part of a much larger Celtic celebration labeled Tartan Day South . The celebration will include nine hours of live music, Celtic dancing, pipe bands, herding demonstrations, British car and motorcycle show, artisans and much more. The festival promises patrons the opportunity to enjoy true Irish and Scottish culture just five minutes from the Statehouse and Downtown Columbia.

Tartan Day South was created around National Tartan Day, April 6, to recognize that Americans of Scottish descent have played a "vibrant and influential role in the development of the United States." The festival was developed in Columbia because of the tremendous concentration of Irish and Scottish descendents in South and North Carolina.

"The [Historic Columbia] Speedway lends itself perfectly for handling an event of this nature. The nine acre grass infield provides the space necessary to hold multiple activities at the same time. The venue offers plenty of parking just moments from downtown and I-26," said Donavan Murray, President of Celtic Force Enterprises, a company that helps produce other such festivals around the region.

The event will be the kick-off to the Highland Games season throughout the Southeast. The celebration begins Friday, April 1, with a dinner and reception at the event's host hotel, the Holiday Inn & Suites Columbia-Airport on McSwain Drive in West Columbia. The evening will host a whisky tasting as well as a kilt fashion show with live music to season the night. The event moves to the Speedway on Saturday, April 2, for a full day of festivities.

Highland Athletics are in many ways the precursor to many of our current track and field events. These events will be done old school in a manner established hundreds of years ago wearing traditional kilts. The events include the stone toss (16 and 22 pound), hammer throw, weight for distance (28 and 56 pound), weight for height (56 pound), sheaf toss over a bar, and the caber toss. Professionals and amateurs will be competing at Tartan Day South for season long points.

The festival will be full of cultural demonstrations like bag piping, drumming, Irish step, Scottish country, and Highland dancing. A "Bird of Prey" organization will demonstrate the art of falconry while border collies show off their sheep herding prowess. The Palmetto Fencers will perform swordsmanship demonstrations. Artist and storytellers will be on hand to truly give a full flavor of the Celtic experience. True to the speedway's heritage, cars of the British Isles will be on display.

If you do not own your own kilt, there will be a Celtic marketplace with an array of unique products to take the experience home. A taste of the British Isles will be provided by Celtic vendors as well as standard American fare. There will be plenty of educational opportunities and play areas for the kids. They will even be given their time on the field in a mini-game, hands on activity.

Celtic Music will fill the air at the festival with live performances from no less than eight bands. The line-up includes:

THISTLEDOWN TINKERS, seasoned music veterans from N.C., weave traditional Scottish and Irish music with original creations while adding a southern swagger that sets the stage on fire.

DAVEY MORRISON, musician, sculptor, writer and native son of Scotland, now lives in the U.S., but embodies the uniqueness of the Celtic spirit. Davey will be singing songs, playing flute, telling stories and passing on his experiences as a Scot that relocated to America.

MARCILLE WALLIS, an accomplished hammer dulcimer player, has been captivating music lovers of all ages with haunting melodies from Brittany and Galicia, rousing reels and jigs from Ireland, and traditional Scottish pipe tunes with a non-traditional twist.

Colm O'Brian & Sean Conner from Dublin will fill out the all day music presentations.

Clans and heritage organizations will be on hand to discuss their family's role in Celtic history. This year's honored groups include The Ancient Order of Hibernians, Society of Scottish Armigers, and The Charleston Scottish Society. Along with the Clan organizations other experts will be on-hand to provide genealogy information and assist you in finding your family tartan.

The featured charity, Celtic Heritage International Exchange Foundation, facilitates the exchange of young musicians and artist between the US and the Celtic nations. The 501C-3 non-profit organization is based in the upstate of South Carolina.

Event benefits the Marine Corps Toys for Tots program

Since 2001, Mid-Carolina Rifle Club, located at 3462 Fish Hatchery Road in Gaston, has been hosting it's annual Toys for Tots Action Pistol Match benefiting the Marine Corps Toys for Tots program. The 9th Annual Toys for Tots Action Pistol Match will be Saturday, December 11. Registration will begin at 8:00 a.m. and shooting will begin promptly at 9:00 a.m. In lieu of a match entry fee, competitors are asked to donate a toy valued at $20 or more to the Toys for Tots program. Cash donations are also welcomed. All proceeds from this match are donated to the Toys for Tots program. Last year, the event collected enough toys to completely fill three trucks the Marines used to transport the toys. In addition, Mid-Carolina Rifle Club collected over $6300 in cash for the Toys for Tots program. All of these generous donations benefited local families.

This event has increased in popularity since its inception. The match resembles the action pistol matches seen on ESPN and the Outdoors Channel (sanctioned by the United States Practical Shooting Association). Based upon early inquiries, it appears that this will be the largest match to date. Mid-Carolina Rifle Club will cap the number of competitors at 120. The Club expects several National champions to be in attendance as well as a number of nationally ranked junior shooters. The match is a unique Toys for Tots event in that the Marines have an opportunity to compete in the match, which they thoroughly enjoy because they may not be able to participate in other TFT events. Competitors enjoy being with the Marines and having the opportunity to thank them for their hard work and sacrifices.

Celebrate Runway Re-Opening at Columbia Metropolitan Airport's Runway Run

On Saturday, November 20th, Columbia Metropolitan Airport will celebrate the re-opening of Runway 11/29 with a 5K Run and a 1-Mile Wing Walk on the runway beginning at 10:00 a.m. Beginning at 10:30 a.m. will be the Kids’ Fun Run for ages K5 – 5th Grade. Reconstruction began on the 8601’ runway in April and includes removing approximately 1.67 miles of existing asphalt and over 400 in-pavement lights and replacing with new 16” thick concrete pavement and new LED in-pavement lights. The W. L. Harper Company is the prime contractor to include several DBE firms as sub-contractors. An estimated 50 jobs were created as a result of this project. Interesting fact: the amount of concrete being placed equals to the amount necessary to build a new 4” thick sidewalk from Columbia all the way to Jacksonville, Florida. The cost of the project is $12,994,419 and is primarily funded through grants from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

South Carolina Hosts Dixie Youth Baseball World Series

The Lexington area prepares to welcome 16 teams from 11 states for the 2010 Dixie Youth Baseball “O” Zone World Series Saturday, July 31 through Thursday, August 5 at the Lexington Sports Complex just off Highway #1 on Ball Park Road in Lexington.

Sixteen teams from 11 different states (240 players and coaches) including Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Florida, Mississippi, Louisiana, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia will compete for the championship in this annual event. There will also be a host team from Lexington, S.C. The other four teams are runners up from these states. The “O” Zone World Series brings youth ages 11 to 12 to participate in the eight-day tournament.

Baseball fans will enjoy a home-run derby July 30 at 2:00 p.m. at the Lexington Sports Complex. Admission to the derby is $1 per person with all proceeds going to the Dixie Youth Scholarship Fund. Winners of the derby will be awarded their trophies at the opening ceremonies later that evening.

Opening ceremonies will be held Friday, July 30 beginning at 7:00 p.m. at Lexington High School Football Stadium. The event is free to the public. After the parade of teams, fans will enjoy brief remarks from local officials, a special musical performance, and keynote address by Jonny Thompson, head coach of the 2010 Class 4A South Carolina High School Championship White Knoll High School baseball team. Members of the National Championship South Carolina Gamecock baseball team have also been invited as special guests of the event (but are unconfirmed at this time).

World Series baseball games will begin at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 31. The South Carolina and local Lexington County team will take the fields at 8:00 p.m. against Alabama and North Carolina respectively.

This will be the first Dixie Youth Baseball tournament to be broadcast nationwide through an arrangement made though SCETV. The last three games of the tournament will be available for viewers at home via a live feed to PBS stations around the country.

Buddy Baker Adds Luster to the Love Chevrolet Spring Festival at the Columbia Speedway

Buddy Baker, the first man to win NASCAR’s “Big Four” race contests – Daytona, Talladega, Darlington and Charlotte – will be one of the many legendary former racers to participate in the Love Chevrolet Spring Festival at the Columbia Speedway on Saturday, April 25. The Spring Festival is free to the public and will run from 9:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. and feature vintage racecars and show cars, autograph and photo sessions, food and musical entertainment. The Columbia Speedway is located at 2001 Charleston Highway. Before that, he competed in his first career race on the half-mile clay oval.

Although Baker has retired from a racing career that spanned 34 seasons, he operates the Buck Baker Racing School. He has worked as one of the more colorful TV commentators and currently hosts a call-in racing show on Sirius satellite radio channel 128. In fact, on his program, he’s stated, “Columbia Speedway was a spectacular place to be, that’s the first track I ever raced on. My dad and I had some kind of great races there against some of the best. I’m looking forward to being there again. I just wish they were still racin’ there. I left there embarrassed lots of times.”

Baker, who scored 17 major speedway NASCAR victories, and 19 overall, is a member of the South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame, the National Motorsports Association Hall of Fame, the International Motorsports Hall of Fame and the Charlotte (Lowes) Motor Speedway Court of Legends.

Columbia Hits Pavement in First Ever Triathlon

Columbia Downtown Triathlon to bike and run the city’s streets

Columbia, SC – (March 17, 2009) The Columbia Regional Sports Council would like to announce the arrival of Columbia Downtown Triathlon on Saturday March 21. This is Columbia’s first triathlon and the sports event will feature a 500meter swim, 10 mile bike ride, and a 5km run. More than 300 athletes have signed up to participate. The triathlon is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.

The swim will take place at the Blatt P.E. Center at the University of South Carolina located on Wheat Street. From the swim, athletes will bike 10 miles with a 3.3 mile loop that goes through Main, Gervais, Harden, and Blossom streets. Rounding out the triathlon is the run where athletes will utilize the pedestrian overpass at Assembly and Blossom streets and run down Lincoln Street. Teams Row South for the Winter

The Columbia Regional Sports Council welcomes college rowing crews to the Richland County Rowing Center for winter and spring training. This week Syracuse University and Bucknell are enjoying the Famously Hot Broad river and will be training there until March 15. On March 15 through March 22, Massachusetts area schools, Tabor Academy and St. Mark’s School will be in town to enjoy three miles of unobstructed warm flat-water.

Hosting teams of this nature generates an awareness of Columbia, SC and provides an economic impact upon the community. Commenting on the benefits of hosting the athletes and staff members, Executive Director for the Columbia Regional Sports Council, Scott Powers states, “This is valuable business for our community. Columbia Opens the Three Rivers Greenway Esplanade at CanalSide

The Three Rivers Greenway Esplanade along the Congaree River in downtown Columbia opened today in a ribbon cutting ceremony featuring Mayor Coble, City Council, and several other prominent leaders involved in the construction of the site. The site is located adjacent to the private development known as CanalSide.

The Esplanade is an approximately 1,100 linear foot public walkway on City wned property, located along the east bank of the Columbia Canal on the former CCI property. The project scope included repairing an existing and historic granite retaining wall and construction of the public walkway including surveying, site clearing, excavation and fill, grading, installation of underground utilities, hardscape and landscape, stairs and associated guardrails and handrails. The site is located adjacent to the private development known as CanalSide.

Richard Petty made his racing debut there and recorded his first win there one year later. Columbia Speedway was the venue that hosted NASCAR’s first Grand National/Cup night race.

The Columbia Regional Sports Council (CRSC) welcomes Katie Wilmesherr as new Sales Manager. Wilmesherr’s major responsibility will include marketing to the archery, billiards, boxing, cheerleading, darts, disc golf, equestrian, football, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, ice skating, rugby, swimming/diving, track & field, and volleyball markets to host their events in the Columbia metropolitan area. She began her new role on Monday, February 2.

A 2006 graduate of the University of South Carolina, Wilmesherr is new to the Sports Marketing industry. Prior to joining the CRSC, she was Assistant Vice President, Community Bankers Council for the South Carolina Bankers Association. Wilmesherr devotes a lot of her time to community service and sits on a few Boards in Columbia including the USC Young Alumni Council Board and the Columbia Opportunity Resource (COR) Board where she serves as the Development Chair.

Lexington's Andrew receives service award

Jorge Andrew of Lexington, S.C., recently received the USTA/USPTA Community Service Award. Andrew is the director of tennis operations for the Lexington County Recreation and Aging Commission in Lexington, S.C.

Andrew was recognized during the USPTA's annual awards breakfast at the USPTA World Conference on Tennis. The United State Professional Tennis Association, the world's oldest and largest association of tennis-teaching professionals, hosted its annual World Conference Sept. 15-20 at La Quinta Resort and Club in La Quinta, Calif. The Community Service Award is a cooperative award presented annually by the United States Tennis Association as part of USPTA's award program.

Andrew has a strong commitment to bringing tennis to his community and helping to grow the game, which can be seen through his involvement with several tennis committees. He is currently the vice chairman of the USTA junior team tennis national committee, has served on the USTA Southern youth community tennis programs committee for the past four years and on the community tennis and adult competition committees for two years. He is in his second term as USTA South Carolina vice president and as a member of the hall of fame committee.

He is also a USTA recreational coach workshop master trainer, a USPTA Master Professional, a QuickStart Tennis Play Format specialist and a USTA High Performance Coach. Andrew is the tournament director of the 2009 national public parks tennis championships.

The Lexington County Recreation and Aging Commission owns and operates the Lexington County Tennis Complex, where Andrew serves as director of tennis operations, has 21 lighted courts and a 4,600-square-foot clubhouse. In addition, the commission is building a new state-of-the-art tennis complex with 24 lighted courts, four QuickStart Tennis Play Format tennis courts and a 10,000-square-foot clubhouse with a fitness room. The new facility will accommodate more tournaments, programs, leagues and new players.

The United States Tennis Association is the national governing body for the sport of tennis in the United States. NGA Hooters Pro Golf Tour Tees Off With A $200,000 Purse

Columbia, SC - (August 13, 2008) – The Columbia Regional Sports Council is proud to announce the National Golf Association's Hooters Professional Golf Tour is returning to Columbia. The 2008 Capitol Chevrolet Classic at Woodcreek Farms presented by Time Warner Cable and SportsRadio 1400 "The Team" will be played September 8-14, 2008.

The total purse for the Capitol Chevrolet Classic will be $200,000 with $34,000 going to the winner. 168 NGA Tour Professionals will tee-off on Thursday with the lowest 60 golfers plus ties making the cut after Friday's second round.

Admission for the Capitol Chevrolet Classic is free of charge and open to the public. There will be a free junior golf clinic on Tuesday afternoon for all local boys and girls interested in learning the fundamentals of golf. A Pro-Am is scheduled for Wednesday that gives amateurs the chance to play with future stars of golf. 2007 ICF JUNIOR WILDWATER WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS NOMINATED FOR SPORTS TRAVEL AWARD

Columbia, SC – (August 22, 2008) SportsTravel magazine has announced that the 2007 ICF Junior Wildwater World Championships, hosted in Columbia, SC and Charlotte, NC, has been nominated for a 2008 SportsTravel Award. Events are nominated and then voted upon by readers of SportsTravel, the sports world's event magazine. Criteria for nomination and voting include superior organization of and attendance at the event, a superior experience for the competitors and/or spectators at the event, and how the site or venue served to enhance the event. Final balloting is open through September 15, 2008. Winners will be announced at the TEAMS 2008 Conference & Expo, October 21-25, 2008, in Pittsburg.

The Midlands Authority for Conventions, Sports & Tourism is developing a marketing campaign to attract more conventions and visitors to Columbia. A slogan is only a portion of what this campaign will include. The campaign is a comprehensive marketing process that begins with branding and will be carried through with advertising and direct marketing. The campaign will be designed to strategically target the meeting planners, sports event planners and leisure travelers determined by the Authority to be candidates for the many amenities and products Columbia's tourism community has to offer.

Our efforts are being funded by accommodations taxes generated and paid for by visitors who have come to our city. Accommodations taxes are collected for the purpose of funding tourism, which generates $1 billion in economic impact for the Columbia region each year. The travel and tourism industry saves the average local taxpaying family an estimated $690 a year in taxes. Our goal in conducting this new campaign is to increase this economic impact to our region.

FLW Outdoors Announces 2008 Wal-Mart FLW Tour Schedule
Forrest Wood Cup Heading to Columbia, S.C.

DETROIT (July 11, 2007) - FLW Outdoors announced its 2008 Wal-Mart FLW Tour schedule today at the Chevy Open. The schedule includes some familiar destinations for the world's top bass anglers plus the introduction of a new 12-day off-limits at every tour stop.

The new off-limits, adopted at the request of FLW Tour anglers, will precede an official practice period that starts the Saturday prior to each tournament and extends through Tuesday of the tournament week. Registration for each event will be held on a Wednesday and no competitors will be allowed on tournament waters that day. Competition will run Thursday through Sunday, with the FLW Tour's traditional top-10 cut taking place following Friday's weigh-in. The heaviest cumulative weight from Saturday and Sunday will determine the winning pro as in 2007.

In addition to the off-limits period, FLW Tour anglers may not solicit or receive fishing information from anyone except for confirmed tournament anglers in 2008. Anglers who make the top-10 cut may not solicit or receive fishing information from anyone except for other top-10 anglers. During practice, pro anglers may fish only with other confirmed tournament anglers, immediate family members, approved sponsor representatives or approved media representatives.

Also new for 2008 is an adjustment to the payouts in the $1.5 million Wal-Mart, Chevy and National Guard opens that will see a greater percentage of the field receiving at least $10,000. Payouts of $10,000 cash will now extend through 75th place in Pro Division. Cash awards of $5,000 will extend through 100th place in each of the opens. Payouts in of the tour's three $1 million qualifiers remains unchanged with $10,000 cash awards extending though 50th place and $2,000 cash through 75th place. Additionally, pros finishing 76th through 100th will receive a $100 gas card from BP at each $1 million qualifier in 2008.

"All of our program enhancements for 2008 were adopted to continue to grow the sport," said FLW Outdoors President and CEO Charlie Evans. Wal-Mart FLW Tour competition kicks off Feb. 28-March 2 on Lake Toho in Kissimmee, Fla., and then continues on Lewis Smith Lake in Jasper, Ala., April 3-6. Lake Norman in Charlotte, N.C., will host the $1.5 million National Guard Open April 24-27 followed by the $1.5 million Wal-Mart Open on Beaver Lake in Rogers, Ark., May 15-18. Knoxville, Tenn., will host the fifth tour stop June 19-22 with anglers fishing Fort Loudoun-Tellico, and the Detroit River in Detroit, Mich., will host the $1.5 million Chevy Open July 10-13. The $2 million Forrest Wood Cup presented by Castrol will be held on Lake Murray in Columbia, S.C., Aug. 14-17.

Entry fees for 2008 are unchanged at $3,500 per qualifier and $4,000 per open for pros and $700 per qualifier and $800 per open for co-anglers. The top 100 anglers from the 2007 FLW Tour and the top 30 anglers from the 2007 Wal-Mart FLW Series will have priority entry into the 2008 FLW Tour. Entry dates will be released soon.

Midlands Authority for Conventions, Sports & Tourism Adopts-A-Street

Columbia, SC – (January 25, 2008) In an effort to give back to the community, the Midlands Authority for Conventions, Sports & Tourism (MACST) has signed an agreement to participate in the Adopt-A-Street cleanup program through Keep the Midlands Beautiful and the City of Columbia. The MACST has adopted the portion of Lincoln Street that runs alongside the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center from Blossom Street to Elmwood Avenue. The first cleanup day is scheduled for February 8, 2008.

According to Peter Tarlow, renowned international tourism expert and author, "Beautification helps a tourism entity grow by attracting more visitors, providing positive word of mouth publicity, creating an environment that tends to lift the spirits of service personnel, and creates community pride often resulting in the lowering of crime rates."

Ric Luber, president/CEO for the MACST states, "We like to think of beautification as having an impact on the local economy. When a meeting planner visits the Riverbanks region, it's imperative that we are able to showcase a clean and healthy environment with great restaurants, attractions, and unique shopping. A clean and unpolluted region is a great selling point for our community."

Through the Adopt-A-Highway and Adopt-A-Street programs, caring citizens take part in preserving and maintaining streets throughout the Midlands. Participating community organizations (civic, school or business groups) adopt sections of road in or near their communities and clean litter from those segments at least four times a year for two years.

The benefits are numerous. First, the program serves as an educational tool against littering and establishes stewardship of public lands. Secondly, the program helps advance tourism, development and quality of life for all of our citizens by improving the appearance of our area. Finally, the program saves taxpayer dollars by performing a valuable public service on a volunteer basis.

Striped Bass: Fair. Fish are scattered so try free-lining herring and large minnows in areas where birds (gulls, loons, etc.) are seen. Also look for schooling activity early and late. Fish will be on the surface down to 35 feet.

Largemouth Bass: Fair. Fish slowly using jigs and spinnerbaits in 12 to 20 feet of water and around points.

Crappie: Good. Fish minnows and jigs around brushpiles in 8 to 15 feet of water. Once the waters starts to warm a bit slow trolling in creeks will be effective.

Bream: Fair. Fish in 15 to 30 feet of water using red worms.

Shellcracker: Fair. Use worms in 8-12 feet of water on the bottom. In the afternoon when the water starts to warm look for fish to move a bit shallower.

Catfish: Fair. Use cut herring on the bottom.

New Web Site Offers Up-to-date Fishing Reports for S.C. Lakes, Coast

COLUMBIA, S.C. - Finally there is a solution for anglers tired of scouring the web and only finding old, outdated fishing reports – the South Carolina Fishing Report. An up-and-coming new web site, www.scfishingreport.com, provides weekly fishing reports for every major lake in South Carolina as well as inshore and offshore saltwater trends for the coast. The main page of the site greets users with a map of South Carolina – simply click on a location to get the local fishing report. Additionally, by signing up for SC Fishing Report’s weekly reports, media outlets or individuals can receive each week’s report as soon as it is finalized.

The site has only been under development for a few months but is fast becoming the one-stop home for both professional and amateur anglers before they head out to the water. Insider information from area tackle and bait shops with local expertise is added to the site at least weekly. Once that information is collected and analyzed different bodies of water are ranked to show the best location to catch a particular type of fish at any given time.

In addition to local reports and location rankings, maps, weather and water level data, the site also offers sportsmen an outlet to discuss successful baits, tackle and hotspots. Casual readers can view the message boards and other threads, and a simple, free registration allows users to post questions, comments, or answers.

TUSKEGEE TO FACE VIRGINIA UNION IN PIONEER BOWL X

Columbia, SC - The Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) and the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association have announced that the Virginia Union University Panthers will represent the CIAA as participants in the 10th Annual Pioneer Bowl. The Panthers will face the #13 Tuskegee University Golden Tigers on December 1, 2007 at Charlie W. Johnson Stadium on the campus of Benedict College, Columbia, SC, 2:00pm.

The Panthers, led by Head Coach Arrington Jones, III, will enter the Pioneer Bowl with much to prove after finishing the season with a 9-2 record; falling short of a bid to the NCAA D-II Playoffs. Virginia Union's appearance this year will mark the school's second visit to the Pioneer Bowl. In 2001 Virginia Union faced Tuskegee in Atlanta, GA, but fell to the Golden Tigers, 28-0.

Tuskegee University has participated in the Pioneer Bowl in eight of the ten bowl games and has a 5-2 overall record. Tuskegee is currently undefeated with a 10-0 record and is HBCU’s winningest football team and one win away from their 600th victory. Tuskegee’s is led by the MVP of the SIAC Jacary Atkins, who leads the NCAA in passing efficiency and arguably the best defense in the nation allowing just 8.2 points per game. The Golden Tigers are also ranked in the Top 5 of all defensive categories in the NCAA.

A Press Conference to meet the teams, head coaches, and both commissioner’s will be held on November 29, 2007 at the Embassy Suites Columbia at 6:30 pm, prior to the Pioneer Bowl Banquet where special guest Steve Spurrier will also attend.

BENEDICT TO HOST 2007 PIONEER BOWL

[Columbia, SC] The 10th Annual Pioneer Bowl will be hosted by Benedict College in Columbia, SC at the new Charlie W. Johnson Football Stadium. The game will be played on December 1, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. The "Pioneer Bowl" is a contest between the top teams of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) and the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (CIAA). The "Bowl's" first contest was in 1997 between the Kentucky State University Thorobreds and the Livingstone College Blue Bears. Since the inception of the game, Tuskegee University has represented the SIAC nine times. The SIAC leads the series with 7 wins and 2 losses.

The SIAC is composed of twelve different institutions in five states (Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, South Carolina and Tennessee): Albany State University, Benedict College, Clark Atlanta University, Fort Valley State University, Kentucky State University, Lane College, LeMoyne-Owen College, Miles College, Morehouse College, Paine College, Stillman College and Tuskegee University. The SIAC also has a provisional member, Claflin University.
The SIAC is a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and participates at the Division II level. On an annual basis, the SIAC sponsors six men's championships (baseball, basketball, cross country, football, outdoor track & field and tennis) and six women's championships (basketball, cross country, outdoor track & field, softball, tennis and volleyball).
The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) is an athletic conference consisting of ten historically African-American institutions of higher education: Bowie State University, Elizabeth City State University, Fayetteville State University, Johnson C. Smith University, Livingstone College, St. Augustine's College, St. Paul's College, Shaw University, Virginia State University and Virginia Union University, all working together to set an overall standard of excellence.

O’Sensei Dewey Earwood, Nikki Knitz and Earwood’s Karate Studio are hosting the 35th Annual Dixieland Karate Tournament. This year’s event, featuring competitors from all over the southeast, will take place at the Jamil Shrine Temple August 3-4, 2007.
There will be more than 500 competitors all working towards the 6,000 in cash and prizes including 4-wheelers donated by #1 Sales in Lexington. More than 1,000 spectators are expected to attend.

The National Bicycle League’s (NBL) will again host a BMX Regional August 10-12, 2007 at Columbia’s BMX track located at 4651 Percival Road in Columbia, South Carolina. This event is expected to attract top riders from 15 states to make the trip to Columbia. Many of the riders participating in this event are the top amateurs in the country who are vying for position to make a run at the 2012 Olympics.

The race weekend will begin Friday, August 10th with practice (2:00 pm) and a pre-race Friday night. Racing will begin at 11:00 am on Saturday, August 11th and 8:00 am on Sunday, August 12th. This particular event is the last chance for riders around the country to gain valuable National Points before the National Championship race is held in Louisville, KY on Labor Day Weekend.

In July, the Columbia Riverbanks Region hosted a truly unique event as over 150 international competitors and coaches visited our community to compete in the 2007 Junior Wildwater World Championships -- the first Wildwater World Championship in the history of North America. Our community made itself proud with the hospitality and charm we have always been famous for as well as for the rivers that visitors from 14 foreign nations discovered. They will all take home memories of their visit and hopefully one day in the future, they will have a chance to return for more competitions.

This event was truly a combined effort of the entire community, brought together by the rivers, and I would like to take the time to thank those who made this possible: SCE&G; Mayor Horton and the City of West Columbia’s Fire, Police and Public Works departments; Mayor Coble and the City of Columbia’s Fire, Police and Parks & Recreation departments; Riverbanks Zoo & Garden; Lexington County EMS; Richland County EMS; The River Alliance; South Carolina DNR; New Orleans Riverfront Restaurant; David Jordan and L.J. Construction; The Reserve on the Saluda; USC Sports Medicine Center; Greater Columbia Chamber of Commerce; Columbia World Affairs Council; Sprint/Nextel; the Palmetto Paddlers and all of our dedicated volunteers.

This event was a truly community-wide effort and I would like to send my heart-felt thanks to everyone involved. It was a World Championship to remember!
